You cannot miss the new Maritime Museum in Fremantle, it is a stand out design on the edge of the harbour. The Museum is a short walk from the train station, the popular markets & the centre of Fremantle. It is located near the entrance to this busy port with large container ships & local vessels going past all day.

Be sure to drop by early in the day & make a booking for the submarine tour – it is only small groups & they fill up fast. I visited in the afternoon & missed out as all the sub tours were full.

Not to worry, everything in the museum aside the one thing I really wanted to see was the boat that won the Americas Cup – Australia 2. I cannot believe I got to touch the boat & the famous winged keel, those who follow Americas Cup racing you will know just how cool this is.

The musem is spread over two main levels with extra platforms included so you can get up close to the many boats on display.

There are several different areas to the Maritime Museum which cover different periods of history. There is the naval history section which includes stories of the Australian navy with cut away displays of torpedoes. A video is playing of the last cruise of the submarine on display in the dry dock.

There is the history of the waterfront & everything that Australia ships to the world. A great display on whaling including a modern harpoon & an old whaling boat.

There is heaps more but I will let you see it for yourself.
