The TranzAlpine Train

Christchurch to Greymouth

The TranzAlpine runs from Christchurch to Greymouth & back each day. You can choose to do a day trip & spend an hour in Greymouth or jump off & spend a few day exploring the West Coast.

The carriages have large windows designed for great viewing & there is plenty to see. The trip heads out of Christchurch & across the Canterbury Plains then up the gorges & river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Then it climbs into the Southern Alps before descending down into Greymouth on the West Coast.

Not a bad way to spend four & a half hours then a quick walk around Greymouth, grab a bite to eat in one of several local cafes before jumping back on the train & heading back to Christchurch.

The day we took the trip there was a lot of fog around in the morning so we missed some great views on the way out but got views on the way back. The fog also made for some amazing photos on the trip over to the coast.

In the middle of the train is an open air viewing carriage so you to get some amazing photos of the scenery. Bring a jacket because it is cool in the winter time but the air rushing through your hair is great fun.

The train travels through 19 tunnels & 4 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 metres. Each viaduct has a different story behind it. The track is a single track in most cases & is used on a regular basis for the shipping of coal from the west coast to the port of lyttelton.

There are a couple of short stops along the way to pick up passengers & a stop about halfway in Arthurs Pass. This is a good chance to step off for a stretch. You can bring your own snacks or there is a food & drink service onboard.
