Having decided to take a holiday in Christchurch in the middle of winter ( to escape a Melbourne winter ) what do I do – go to a place that is all about the Antarctic & has its own snow room complete with a winter storm.

The International Antarctic Centre is located at the Christchurch International Airport, check out the website for transport options.

Most of the things at the Antarctic Centre are aimed towards kids but there is still plenty for the big kids.

There are static displays with stories of the history of area & what it is like working on the ice. There is something different also, a display of a seal with a Please Touch sign – you don’t see that in a museum.

When you first arrive be sure to check out the times for the Penguin feedings & plan around the other things to make sure you see this.

There is a big room where you can experience being on the ice – luckily they also have warm jackets you can experience also. Its is twice as cold as your fridge in there but you can have a snowball fight & get your pic taken on a snowmobile. There is an igloo for the short ones to run around in & an ice slide for the big kids to slip on & fall on their butts ( so I hear )

If you want to test out the jackets there is a regular storm in the snow room – hint – pull the hood around your cheeks.

One of the extra things you can pay for is the Hagglund ride ( its the blue machine in the pic above ) This is as close to the real thing most people will get unless they grew up in Finland or have been down to the ice. To put it simply this ride was better than any rolla coaster I have ever been on. We went up, down, & all around. Over a gap in the “ice” & took it for a swim.

The International Antarctic Centre is a lot of fun & has heaps of information but the Hagglund ride was the icing on the cake.
