The Fire Services Museum of Victoria is just on the edge of the Melbourne CBD.

It is close to several tram lines & a short walk from the free city circle tram. Check out the website for a directions & the hours it is open.

The museum is staffed by volunteers & only open for a few hours on Thursday, Fridays & Sundays.

The Museum is in an old fire house & backs onto the site of the current Melbourne CBD fire house so keep a hold of the kids on the way there & watch out for the big red engines flying out the front door.

The Museum hosts many school groups as well as visitors from near & far. I was lucky to show up at a quiet time between school groups & got my own personnal tour.

The museum has a massive variety of restored & original equipment & engines on display from the Melbourne Fire department & from around the world.

There are old trucks & horse drawn appliances that make up part of their collection. These change from time to time with others they have in storage.

Some of the static displays include the medals awarded to members of the Melbourne fire department. A collection of helmets from around the world, I never knew that the older helmets were made of leather, always thought they were metal.

There is a collection of badges that used to be displayed on a building from way back when Melbourne had several fire departments run by different insurance companies. If an engine showed up at a fire & it wasn’t their insurance companies client the buildings were sometimes left to burn.

One of the best displays is of the different breathing equipment used by fire fighters over the years. Some of the early designs have to be seen to be believed.

On the way out stop by the shop & check out the items they have to offer from Australia & around the world.

I had a great time at the Fire Museum & would love to go back again. The displays are great but it is the staff & their stories that make the experience.

Don’t tell anyone but I got a quick look around the current firehouse & a modern engine with my guide which was awesome.
