The town of Bendigo is 150 km north-west from Melbourne. You can drive there, take a bus or a Vline Train The trip took a couple of hours & the trains run several trips each way daily. The train ride by itself is great fun & takes you through some small towns & the Victorian country side.

I walked out to the Central Deborah Gold Mine but you can catch the Vintage Tram that starts at the mine & travels across town.

The mine offers a couple of tours:

The Mine Experience Tour which I took takes just over an hour.

Don a miner’s hat & lamp, travel 61 metres beneath the earth & walk in the footsteps of miners who discovered almost one tonne of gold. Includes guided mine surface tour.

The other tour is the Underground Adventure Tour – which takes about 2½ hours

Travel to the third level of the mine – 85 metres below the surface. Gear up in overalls, boots, mining hats & lamps. Climb ladders, work mine drills & search for gold. The tour includes morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea.

(any gold you find on this one you can keep – on my tour I only saw the stuff in the rock & I didn’t pack a pick or any dynamite )

The tour is a lot of fun & the guides are great with some cool stories & they have a bit of fun with you in the dark. As part of the tour you get to experience what it was like working in the dark & see a display of some of the jack hammers.

As part of the package you get to do some gold panning above ground at the end of the tour. The kids & families seem to enjoy this as much as the underground tour. Some found some real gold but not enough to retire on. I had a laugh with the gold panning but all I got was “fools gold” – still it sparkles & looks cool.
